4. The Muslim bride that interrupted her wedding day
For most brides every second of their big day is accounted for, as it is usually a dream they’ve planned from a very young age. Adorned in a white wedding dress, which included a traditional white hijab and veil, newlywed Manal Kassem’s day took an unusual turn.
In mid-December 2014, a lone terrorist, Man Haron Monis, entered a Sydney cafe and took 17 people hostage. A 16 hour stand-off ensued during which Monis raised the “Black Standard”, a flag that’s become synonymous with Political Islam. After hearing shots from inside the cafe police officers stormed the building, two hostages were killed at least one of them by Monis.
A few days later it was the wedding of Mahmod Homaisi and Manal Kassem. They had planned a photoshoot in Sydney not far from the site of the terror attack. Worried it could be insensitive to publicly photograph a Muslim wedding in a city still grieving a terror attack carried out in the name of “Islam” by a madman – this bride did something incredible… she instructed her driver to take them to the memorial site so she could lay her wedding bouquet among the tens of thousands of other floral tributes others had left.
On her arrival the crowd stared in surprise, not knowing what to make of the hijabi bride approaching the memorial. But when she laid down her bouquet they could not help but break into spontaneous applause.
